What are the tonsils and adenoids?
The tonsils and adenoids are part of the immune system and help protect against infection. However, when they become chronically inflamed or enlarged, they can cause ongoing problems.
Why might surgery be recommended?
There are two main reasons:
1. Recurrent infection
Repeated episodes of tonsillitis can affect quality of life and may require specialist evaluation.
2. Airway obstruction
More common in children, enlarged tonsils or adenoids can cause:
- Snoring
- Restless sleep
- Mouth breathing
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
Signs parents should watch for
Children with enlarged tonsils or adenoids may experience poor sleep, daytime fatigue, or behavioural changes due to disrupted breathing at night.
