ADENOID & TONSIL SURGERY
what is ADENOID & TONSIL SURGERY
Adenoid and tonsil surgery referred to medically as adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy are surgical procedures performed to remove the adenoids and/or tonsils. These procedures may be recommended when conservative management has not adequately addressed ongoing symptoms related to recurrent infection or upper airway obstruction, with the most appropriate approach determined following thorough clinical assessment.
The tonsils are small glands located at the back of the throat, while the adenoids sit higher up behind the nose. When these structures become persistently enlarged or repeatedly infected, they can contribute to symptoms including recurring tonsillitis, snoring, sleep disordered breathing, and in children, abdominal pain, behavioural changes, or unexplained fevers. Surgery is performed under general anaesthetic in a hospital setting and takes approximately 30 minutes, with an overnight stay required for both children and adults.
Because adenoid and tonsil surgery can affect both airway function and overall quality of life, a detailed consultation process is essential. At least two consultations are conducted prior to any surgical planning, allowing your surgeon to discuss your symptoms, assess whether surgery is appropriate, explain the available options, and outline the potential risks and limitations relevant to your individual circumstances.
about the procedure
Adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy are surgical procedures performed under general anaesthetic to remove the adenoids and tonsils. Surgery is indicated for two primary reasons: recurrent infection (such as tonsillitis) or obstruction of the upper airway (such as snoring or sleep disordered breathing). The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes in a theatre setting and requires an overnight stay in hospital for both children and adults. At least two consultations are conducted prior to surgery. Individual results vary.
who is suitable?
Surgery may be considered for both children and adults. In children, surgery may be appropriate where there is significant airway obstruction or recurrent tonsillitis generally defined as four to six or more episodes per year, infections requiring hospitalisation, or infections requiring multiple courses of antibiotics. In adults, surgery may be considered for recurrent tonsillitis causing significant disruption to daily life, ongoing sore throat, snoring, or concerns relating to tonsil asymmetry. Suitability is determined following thorough consultation.
RECOVERY
Recovery from adenoid and tonsil surgery varies between children and adults. General guidelines include:
- An overnight hospital stay is required following the procedure
- Children typically experience mild discomfort and recover relatively quickly
- Adults should expect a sore throat post-operatively improvement is generally noted by approximately day five
- A soft diet is recommended for seven to ten days
- Approximately two weeks off work is advised for adults
- Return to light exercise may be considered at two weeks, subject to clinical review
- There is no external swelling or bruising as this is an internal procedure
Your treating doctor will provide specific post operative instructions tailored to your individual circumstances prior to your procedure.
RISKS
As with any surgical procedure, adenoid and tonsil surgery carries potential risks. These may include, but are not limited to:
• Post operative bleeding (occurring in approximately 5% of cases)
• Infection
• Pain or discomfort, particularly in adults
• Swelling or throat discomfort
• Dehydration due to difficulty swallowing
• Adverse reaction to general anaesthesia
• Need for return to hospital in cases of significant bleeding
Your treating doctor will discuss the risks, benefits, alternatives, and recovery process with you in detail during your consultation.
