Scar Revision Surgery
What Is Scar Revision Surgery?
Scar revision surgery is performed to improve the appearance of a scar or to address functional concerns where scarring may affect movement or surrounding structures. While scars cannot be completely removed, their texture, contour or visibility may in some cases be improved following appropriate assessment.
Scarring is a natural part of the healing process. However, scars located on visible areas such as the face may be a source of concern for some individuals. A consultation is required to determine whether treatment is appropriate and to discuss realistic expectations.
The Procedure
A comprehensive assessment is undertaken to evaluate the scar, including its maturity, location, and characteristics. Your skin type, medical history, and any factors that may influence healing such as underlying medical or connective tissue conditions will also be reviewed.
Where appropriate, a range of management options may be considered. These can include non-surgical approaches such as specialised dressings or injectable treatments, through to surgical scar revision involving re-excision and careful closure. The most suitable approach depends on the individual scar and clinical findings.
Scar revision cannot remove a scar completely; however, in selected cases, the overall appearance or function of the area may be improved.
A consultation is required to determine suitability and to discuss potential benefits, limitations, and risks.
All surgical and invasive procedures carry risks. Patients are encouraged to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner prior to proceeding.
