Tip Plasty
What Is Tip Plasty?
Tip plasty is a surgical procedure focused on modifying the nasal tip. It may be considered to address concerns related specifically to the shape, position, or support of the nasal tip. These concerns may be aesthetic, functional, or a combination of both.
The procedure involves adjustment of the nasal tip cartilage without altering other nasal structures such as the nasal bridge, which is primarily bony. By limiting surgery to the tip, changes can be localised to this area where clinically appropriate.
The nasal tip plays an important role in overall nasal appearance and facial balance. As such, surgical planning requires careful assessment of nasal anatomy and proportion.
Dr William Mooney has developed specific surgical approaches to nasal tip modification based on his clinical experience. The suitability of tip plasty and the surgical technique used are determined following a comprehensive consultation and assessment.
As with all surgical procedures, outcomes vary between individuals and a detailed discussion of risks, limitations, and alternative treatment options is essential prior to proceeding.
The Procedure
Tip plasty is performed under general anaesthesia using either an open or closed approach, depending on individual anatomy and surgical assessment. The open approach involves a small incision across the columella, while the closed approach accesses the nasal tip through the nostrils without an external incision.
The procedure focuses on reshaping and supporting the nasal tip cartilage to address concerns related to tip shape, position, or function, including selected cases of nasal tip collapse affecting breathing.
Suitability and surgical approach are determined following a comprehensive consultation.
All surgical and invasive procedures carry risks. Patients are encouraged to seek a second opinion before proceeding
BEFORE & AFTER
Post-procedure images are typically taken between 3 to 12 months following treatment.
Individual results vary and these photographs are provided for illustrative purposes only. They do not represent or guarantee that similar outcomes can be achieved. Factors such as individual anatomy, healing response, genetics, and lifestyle may influence results.

Recovery
Recovery
Recovery times can vary between individuals. Generally:
A nasal dressing or splint may be applied immediately after surgery
Swelling and bruising around the nose are common in the early post operative period
Mild discomfort and nasal congestion may occur
Most patients return to usual daily activities within one to two weeks
Refinement of the nasal tip and final results may take several months
Following post-operative instructions carefully is essential for optimal healing.
Risks
As with any surgical procedure, otoplasty carries potential risks. These may include, but are not limited to:
- Infection
- Bleeding or haematoma
- Scarring
- Changes in skin sensation
- Asymmetry
- Prolonged swelling
- Need for further surgery
- Anaesthetic related complications
Your surgeon will discuss all relevant risks in detail during your consultation.
